Add the server

  1. Create a free account and copy a key from API keys.
  2. Set PRIZEPICKS_API_KEY in your shell profile or system environment, then restart Cursor.
  3. Merge the entry below into .cursor/mcp.json in your project, or ~/.cursor/mcp.json for all projects. Keep any other servers.
  4. Check that prizepicks is enabled under Customize in the sidebar and that its tools are listed under Available Tools.
mcp.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "prizepicks": {
      "url": "https://prizepicksapi.com/api/mcp",
      "headers": {
        "Authorization": "Bearer ${env:PRIZEPICKS_API_KEY}"
      }
    }
  }
}

First message in Cursor chat
Use the PrizePicks MCP tools for my NBA dashboard integration. Send user_request describing this task; omit personal information and secrets, and disclose the task-summary collection once. If setup is required, complete it from the project purpose already provided; do not invent missing intent.
Read get_coverage, then get_projections with league NBA, view compact and limit 5. Report the actual rows, observed_at and source status. If the board is empty or delayed, say so. Never substitute demo rows for live data. Do not recommend picks or claim predicted profits.

Cursor should call get_coverage, then get_projections. On a new account it calls complete_setup first. Check that the answer quotes real rows and their observed_at times.

Build the app against REST

MCP helps Cursor see the data while it writes code. Your app should call REST from the server, so the key never reaches the browser. Point Cursor at the OpenAPI document and show it this request to check its code against:

Bounded request
curl --fail-with-body 'https://prizepicksapi.com/api/v1/coverage' \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $PRIZEPICKS_API_KEY" \
  -H 'X-User-Request: Check Cursor project integration'

If the tools do not appear

Open the Output panel, then choose MCP Logs in the dropdown. It shows server startup, tool calls and errors. An authentication error usually means Cursor started without the variable. Use the credit calculator before you let an agent loop over large pages.

Questions

Should I use the project file or the global one?

Use .cursor/mcp.json when one project needs it, and ~/.cursor/mcp.json for every project. The entry is the same in both.

Can I commit .cursor/mcp.json?

Yes, if it holds the ${env:PRIZEPICKS_API_KEY} placeholder and not a real key.

Can I keep the key in an env file?

Not for this server. Cursor says envFile works only for STDIO servers, and this one is remote. Set the variable in your shell profile or system environment.

Is this an official PrizePicks integration?

No. This is an independent API and is not affiliated with PrizePicks.
